Mist Harbor Anthem

BACKGROUND

On the Day of the Huntress, the 21st day of Lormesta, in the year 5111 Administrator Ilsola the following.

Greetings and Salutations!
Since this is a new year, I'm happy to announce the start of a whole new set of contests for Mist Harbor! The first contest is the CREATE AN CITY ANTHEM FOR MIST HARBOR! Now that Mist Harbor has had a chance to expand and grow, it's time that we roll up our sleeves and think of an anthem to show your pride in our town. The anthem should be lyrical and catchy. It should be a song and NOT a limerick. It should be no more than four stanzas, but may include a repeating chorus. It MUST be an original work.

I of course busied myself in creating my masterpiece. Ilsola announced a few months later that there had been four entries received and that on the Day of the Huntress, the 18th day of Charlatos, in the year 5111, a ceremony would be held to announce the winning entry.

CEREMONY

[Oleander Avenue]
Three shops on one side of the street have obviously been decorated in relation to one another. The first has been painted a deep green with white trim, while the other two shops wear lighter shades of the same color. A painted pattern upon the cobblestones marks the entry to a large woven grass hall, which is flanked by a pair of miniature evergreen trees encircled with white satin and velvet ribbon.
Also here: Velai, Kateerina, Lord Halbrak, Squire Legionnaire Vilorcasdra, Sagoth, Vender, Khystra, Dhairn, Taelinn who is sitting, High Lord Avantos, Faulkil who is sitting, Lady Ilsola, Corlyne, Soledat, Maleisse, Laphrael, High Lady Rohese, Lady Lithyia, Fleurs, Lady Riend. You also a sterling silver serving cart with some stuff on it and a wide performance platform with some stuff on it.

>l on car
On the silver serving cart you see a sterling silver coffee decanter, a painted dusky blue porcelain teapot, a lavender and almond flour biscuit, a handful of plump purple grapes, a cranberry apple scone and a slice of cashew banana bread.

Lithyia smiles at you.
You smile at Lithyia.
Lithyia points at a sterling silver serving cart.

You say, "Just looking for the ale."

You grin.
Lithyia grins.
Lithyia nods.

>l on plat
On the performance platform you see a polished teak podium and a misty grey cloth-covered table.

>l on table
On the cloth-covered table you see a golden linden linen press, a white birch linen press and a polished teak linen press.

Speaking to you, Fleurs asks, "Are you going to perform for us?"

You say, "I suspect not."

Lady Ilsola just arrived.
Ilsola smiles.

Ilsola says, "Good evening."

Ilsola smiles.
{everyone says hello}

Ilsola says, "I hope that you had an enjoyable day."

Speaking softly to Ilsola, Rohese says, "And yourself, I hope."

Ilsola says, "Indeed."

You say, "Aye - voice is hoarse - blame Droughtsman."

Rohese smiles at you.
Ilsola starts chuckling at you!
Lithyia grins at you.

Ilsola says, "Welcome everyone, and thank you for coming."

Faulkil asks, "Shouldn't there be a banging of the gavel to start things off?"

Ilsola chuckles.

Ilsola says, "I prefer to be a bit more relaxed than that."

Ilsola says, "There were four entries into the Mist Harbor Anthem challenge."

Ilsola says, "I've arranged musicians so that I can share them with you...."

Ilsola says, "I will attempt to do them honor."

Ilsola says, "I will sing them from honorable mention, on upward until we come to the final piece, which is the new anthem of the Harbor."

Ilsola says, "Therefore, without further delay, and with a firm apology, I will sing to you the honorable mention."

HONORABLE MENTION

Ilsola turns towards the minstrels and gestures for them to begin. The tune starts abruptly, without any fanfare. Jaunty and slightly disjointed, the tune rolls on in a catchy manner.

Ilsola sings loudly:

"Hail to thee Mist Harbor,
Our home and native isle!
In pedal boats we do ardor,lBecause its worth our while!"

The tune rolls onward, reminiscent of a carnival tune that rolls through town.

Ilsola sings loudly:

"We sing to thee Mist Harbor,
From the east all thru the west,
We have exquisite barbers-
We think they are the best!"

Several of the winds blare in counter harmony to the uplifting strumming of the strings.

Ilsola sings loudly:

"We have the finest bath house,
(It has baths as well as sinks!)
Though we don't let Trallihn in,
Even though he really stinks!"

Ilsola sings amusedly:

"Keep us safe Mist Harbor,
From winds, and rains, and goons,
But don't get too attached to folks...
You know we have typhoons!"

The musicians stop as abruptly as they started.

{laughter and applause follow} Sagoth says, "Not bad for honorary mention."

Ilsola says, "It is a shame he's not here."

Rohese softly says, "Very amusing."

Vender asks, "Will ya be making music boxes with the songs in them to be played?"

Speaking to himself, Vender says, "I'd buy one."

Ilsola says, "And now, if I could have your respect. We will begin with our third place entry...."

THIRD PLACE

Ilsola turns and nods to the minstrels on the platform.
Subtle and sweet, the strings begin their tune and are created by the wind instruments. Each minstrel begins a rhythmic thumping with their feet upon the platform to create a complimentary staccato that brings forth a charming melody.

Ilsola sings somberly:

"Steeped in mystery this land of ours-
Gladdens the eye and quickens the heart-
Perfect the skies of cloudless blue-
Precious blooms of every hue."

Twining abuot the main body of the strings, the song continues with the light sound of a flute stealing the melody.

Ilsola sings melodically:

"On land and glorious waterways-
Friendships made for all our days-
Let all town criers now proclaim-
Our PRIDE in OUR Mist Harbor."

Returning to the more proud rhytym, the musicians worth together for a blended harmony.

Ilsola sings somberly:

"Come fisherman and merchant class-
And travellers from East to West-
Extending out a welcome hand-
Sharing the bounties of sea and land."

Ilsola sings melodically:

"On land and glorious waterways-
Friendships made for all our days-
Let all town criers now proclaim-
Our PRIDE in OUR Mist Harbor."

Once more, the musicians blend their sounds together to create a striking harmony.

Ilsola sings melodically:

"Upon Gardenia Commons land-
Where marble fountain stands erect-
We meet proclaiming all aloud-
Mist harbor calls, and we are proud"

Once more, the flute rises lightly above the rest of the instruments.

Ilsola sings melodically:

"On land and glorious waterways-
Friendships made for all our days-
Let all town criers now proclaim-
Our PRIDE in OUR Mist Harbor."

Slowly, the flute flutters on the air, while the other instruments gently die out. With one last, delicate chirp, the flute too, falls away.

{Rousing applause}

Soledat comments, "So patriotic! Very proud."

Rohese softly exclaims, "So uplifting!"

Speaking to Ilsola, you say, "Beautifully sung."

Ilsola smiles.

Speaking to you, Soledat asks, "Did you write it?"

You nod to Soledat.

Speaking to you, Soledat says, "I loved the opening the most, the descriptions."

Soledat nods to you.

Speaking softly to you, Rohese says, "Wonderful, truly."

You beam happily at Rohese!

Ilsola removes a polished teak linen press from on a misty grey cloth-covered table.

Speaking to you, Ilsola says, "I hope that you will accept this gift. Several of us on the island created it for you. It is bound by this key, and I would ask that you wait to open it until the ceremony has ended."

You beam!

Ilsola offers you a polished copper key trailing purple and grey ribbons.
You accept Ilsola's offer and are now holding a polished copper key trailing purple and grey ribbons.
Ilsola smiles.
Ilsola offers you a polished teak linen press.
You accept Ilsola's offer and are now holding a polished teak linen press.

(OOC) Ilsola's player whispers, "If you find any problems with it, please feel free to let me know."

Ilsola says, "This next piece was interpreted as a high soprano song. I hope that I do it justice."

SECOND PLACE

Light and breezy, the tune begins with a gentle introduction by a pair of piccolos. Slowly, the tune is joined by the breathy grace of the shawm and then by the spritely plucking of the harp.

Ilsola sings with a soaring soprano:

"Once you visit it is hard to believe-
There is anything else you need
Than the view of the open seas
Or the fruit from Fickles' trees."

Ilsola sings with a soaring soprano:

"The harbor is where artists thrive
Every day there are more that arrive
They come ready to learn and grow
Working to share what they know."

Ilsola sings whimsically:

"If you need to get away and reprieve-
When you feel like you can't breathe-
Like you're drowning without any air-
Mist Harbor is ready to share!"

The harp creates a small cascade of scales that seems to reign in the dancing piccollo and shawm. The melody returns a bit more confined, but none the less whimsical for its presence.

Ilsola sings with a soaring soprano:

"Island living is what we promote
Get yourself an bungalow or boat
Everyone needs a time to unwind
Mist Harbor is relaxation defined"

Ilsola sings with a soaring soprano:

"Colors you never thought could exist
Made more vibrant against the mist
Birds with feathers of ultramarine
Flowers in fuschia, coral and citrine"

As if escaping its confines, the piccolo runs away from the melody to create its own counter rythme that is light and carefree.

Ilsola sings whimsically:

"If you need to get away and reprieve-
When you feel like you can't breathe-
Like you're drowning without any air-
Mist Harbor is ready to share!"

The shawm and harp hold their final notes, while the piccollo rises into a delicate aria before finally fading away.

{Great Applause}

Soledat exclaims, "That does a lot to promote the island!"

Ilsola smiles.

Speaking cheerfully to Ilsola, Maleisse says, "That was such a lovely musical composition. Thank you for making it come to life."

Speaking softly to Maleisse, Rohese says, "Wonderful."

Rohese kisses Maleisse tenderly on the cheek.

Speaking to Ilsola, you say, "You have a very large vocal range."

You nod to Ilsola.
Laphrael applauds Maleisse.
Soledat nods in agreement to you.
Ilsola chuckles.

Speaking softly to Ilsola, Rohese says, "You shouldn't be so modest about your voice."

Speaking curiously to Ilsola, Soledat asks, "Are you a trained singer as well as an administrator?"

Ilsola says, "I felt my voice falter a bit on the higher notes, but I suppose."

Ilsola nods to Soledat.
Rohese waves her hand in a dismissive gesture.

Speaking softly to Ilsola, Rohese says, "I never noticed."

Ilsola says, "We were all once something more before we became what we are."

Ilsola smiles at Soledat.

Speaking to Ilsola, you say, "Was afraid to hold out a glass when you hit some of those notes."

Soledat nods in agreement to Ilsola.
Rohese giggles at you.
Ilsola starts chuckling at you!
Speaking to Maleisse, Ilsola says, "I hope that you are proud of your piece, I know that it provided us with a welcomed challenge."

Speaking to Ilsola, Maleisse says, "It was excellently performed and I hope it brought honor to this lovely town."

Ilsola says, "That last piece was created by the lovely Lady Veloth."

Ilsola removes a white birch linen press from on a misty grey cloth-covered table.

Speaking to Maleisse, Ilsola says, "This is a token of our appreciation."

Ilsola says, "They were created under the aid of several merchants and I hope that you find them pleasing."

Ilsola says, "I ask that you please wait to open them until after the ceremony is complete, or at least the formal portion."

Ilsola says, "Also, and Bremerial I forgot to say this to you, please read the note within first."

Ilsola offers Maleisse a polished silver key trailing purple and grey ribbons.
Maleisse accepts Ilsola's silver key.
Ilsola offers Maleisse a white birch linen press.
Maleisse accepts Ilsola's birch linen press.
Maleisse purses her mouth, pondering her birch linen press. The expression on her face speaks volumes.

FIRST PLACE AND NEW MIST HARBOR ANTHEM

Punctuated by the gentle thumping of the tambourine, the song rises like the gentle waves of the ocean. Light at first, the lute and mandolin strum a delicate rhythm that rises and falls. Winding its way, like a dove seeking land, a fife begins a soft melody through the center of the piece that slowly grows sonorous.

Ilsola sings ethereally:

"Oh Siren of tempestuous seas,
Your beauty now we hail.
Resplendent in your finery-
Of nature's comely veil."

Rising to meet the fife, a delicate reed pipe takes on the tune and the fife allows it by falling into a gentle rise and fall of delicate chirps and trills. Ever present and calm, the mandolin and lute continue their tune.

Ilsola sings ethereally:

"Crowned in mists of pearly white,-And bathed in waters blue.
Fair maiden isle of wondrous tale.
Bedecked in verdant hue"

Continuing its gentle rise, the flute trills into the higher registers and seems to leave the other instruments behind to create a quiet backdrop of ebbing and flowing sounds.

Ilsola sings operatically:

"From storm raged beach and harbor wide-
To sun-drenched leafy glade-
Beloved by those who walk your paths-
Or those who favor trade"

Slowly, the fife rises to greet the flute, but both are rebuffed by the form sound as the tamborine makes its presence known. Loud, yet rhythmic, the beat scolds the flying wind instruments to return to the gentle rhythm of the strings.

Ilsola sings with a soaring soprano:

"Though Charl's Teeth gnash with every squall-
And fierce Four Winds blow-
So proud are we to call you home-
Our archipelago"

The tambourine falters, and gently dies away, but the fife rises from the softening sound for a single, lone trill. Carefully, the other minstrels stop playing and allow the fife to draw the song to conclusion.

Rohese lets out a long, contemplative breath.
Lithyia applauds.
Khystra grins slowly.
Soledat applauds.
Faulkil applauds.
Rhigale applauds.
Halbrak applauds.
Taelinn applauds.
You applaud.
Tabrina applauds.
Faulkil lets out a cheer!

Lithyia exclaims, "That was wonderful!"

Khystra applauds Rohese.

Soledat exclaims, "So beautiful!"

Corlyne applauds Rohese.

Rohese blushes sheepishly to herself.
Laphrael turns to Rohese and cheers!

Rohese softly says, "Thank you."

Lithyia applauds Rohese.
Corlyne gives Rohese a lingering kiss on the cheek.
Halbrak applauds Rohese.

Halbrak deeply says, "That was very very good."

Ilsola says, "That piece, and our new anthem, was created by High Lady Bayvel-Timsh'l."

Straightening her back, Rohese gives a formal, low curtsy. She inclines her head as well, giving a brief nod.

Speaking to Rohese, you say, "I have so say - in all seriousness - that was a very excellent anthem you wrote."

Soledat applauds Rohese.

Speaking softly to you, Rohese says, "Thank you, you are too kind."

You applaud Rohese.

Speaking to Ilsola, you say, "And once again, very well sung. You did the words justice."

Ilsola blushes a nice shade of rosy pink.

Ilsola exclaims, "You are too kind!"

Ilsola removes a polished gold key trailing purple and grey ribbons from her belt.

Speaking softly to Ilsola, Rohese says, "I think I speak for us all when I say we were honoured to be asked and you sang them all beautifully."

Ilsola removes a golden linden linen press from on a misty grey cloth-covered table.
Ilsola says, "It is one of the better duties of being Adminstrator, I must admit."

Ilsola offers Rohese a polished gold key trailing purple and grey ribbons.
Rohese accepts Ilsola's gold key.

Ilsola says, "Please, guests, feel free to partake in the refreshments provided."

Soledat interestedly asks, "Do we get to see what's in the presses now?"

Ilsola chuckles.

Speaking breathlessly to Maleisse, Rohese exclaims, "Open it, open it!"

Ilsola says, "If the ladies wish to share them with you, they may."

You stand back up.
You turn towards Ilsola and render a sharp salute with your teak linen press.
Ilsola offers Rohese a golden linden linen press.
Rohese accepts Ilsola's linden linen press.
Rohese smiles at Ilsola.
Speaking softly to Ilsola, Rohese says, "Thank you."

Ilsola says, "Enjoy your evening, everyone."

Ilsola smiles.
Ilsola curtsies.
Lady Ilsola just entered a large woven grass hall.
